Electric Underfloor Heating Installation for a Home Without Gas

We were contacted by a client with a need for a heating solution for their period property, which lacked access to mains gas. To meet their requirement for an energy-efficient electric heating system, we recommended our HMHMAT160W heating mats installed on to 10mm insulation, ensuring minimal additional build height and unobstructed walls.

The Challenge

The owners had secured planning permission for a new extension adjoining their rural property. However, efficiently heating the new space presented a significant challenge.

Further, the homeowners wanted to optimise wall space and avoid restrictions on their furniture layout, making panel heaters otherwise unsuitable. It was also crucial to keep both the purchase and installation costs low, as well as minimise disruption to the ongoing construction work.

With plans to install a photovoltaic (PV) system on the extension, the owners aimed to utilise the 'free' electricity generated to power the heating system and their contractors recommended our expertise. Given the absence of mains gas and the prohibitive cost of installing a plumbed system, an electric solution emerged as the most viable option. We were thus engaged to provide an energy-efficient electric heating system for the new extension.

The Solution

For the client it was crucial to have a system that could quickly heat the space and continue to provide a consistent and reliable source of heating to ensure their extension could be comfortably used for regular meals and entertaining guests.

We completed a remote site survey and collaborated with the installation contractors to design a heating solution that matched the available power and preserved the building's aesthetic. We recommended our efficient and easy-to-install HMHMAT160W heating mats controlled by an HMH200 smart thermostat.

For maximum efficiency the heating mats were installed on to our TTB-010-7PCK 10mm coated insulation boards. This setup reduces the running costs and enables the heating system to reach temperature quickly and efficiently.

The Outcome

Electric underfloor heating proved an ideal solution for this property, particularly given its off-gas location. Our high-quality electric underfloor heating system was installed without adding massively to the build height, and the process was both efficient and cost-effective, with the entire installation being completed in less than a day.

The result is a space to entertain, that is beautifully warm and can be furnished without the constraints posed by radiators or panel heaters. The heating system responds swiftly, warming the room and floor in under 30 minutes.

A significant advantage is that once the proposed solar battery system is installed, it will power the heating system using the on-site generated 'free' electricity. This setup, when used together with current battery technology is incredibly efficient.

The homeowner was particularly impressed with the speed of the installation and the subsequent lower costs for installation charges. A single tradesman can easily install this system, with an electrician being required to make the final connections.

Conclusion

Electric underfloor heating systems are becoming increasingly popular for properties without access to mains gas. This project demonstrates how these systems can be seamlessly integrated into any type of property, maintaining both their aesthetic and functional integrity.

For homeowners looking to modernise their heating solutions while preserving the character and usability of their living spaces, electric underfloor heating offers an economical, efficient, and flexible option. The added benefit of compatibility with renewable energy sources such as PV/Solar battery systems makes it a future-proof choice that combines comfort with sustainability.

Our involvement in this project highlights our commitment to providing heating solutions that meet current needs and support future energy independence. Whether for new builds, extensions, or retrofits, electric underfloor heating continues to prove its worth and versatility in a range of applications.
